One of the oldest towns in Tamil Nadu, Kumbakonam is the famous temple town of South India set amidst two rivers, Cauvery and Arasalar, giving it a picturesque outlook. The busy, dusty commercial centre situated in the Thanjavur district, Kumbakonam acts as a hub for farmers from surrounding villages to sell their produce.

Kumbakonam is famous for its traditional houses, dozens of temples scattered around the town, panchloha idols, silk, brass vessels and betel leaves (famously known as the kumbakonam vetrilai). The popular Hindu Kumb mela, mahamaham, that is celebrated every 12 years in Kumbakonam is the signature festival of the town.
